Description

Persian city map made by Matrakçı Nasuh in the 16th century.

Bosnian-born polymath Matrakçı Nasuh is known as polymath, mathematician, teacher, historian, geographer, cartographer, swordmaster, navigator, inventor, painter, farmer, and miniaturist. He was brought to Istanbul after being recruited by the Ottoman scouts in Rumelia, educated, served several Ottoman sultans, and became a teacher at Enderun School.

In this series Matrakçı Nasuh illustrates the cities encountered by the Ottoman army as they marched from Istanbul to Baghdad, then Tabriz, Halab and Eskisehir. His miniatures depicting landscapes and urban centres of 16th-century Persia became a style now known as “Matrakçı style”.
